Artikel ini mengungkap seberapa jauh peran madrasahdalam diskurus keilmuan Islam. Islam memberikan posisi tinggibagi pengembangan ilmu. Namun secara historis, klasfikasibahkan herarki ilmu dalam Islam bukan tanpa proses sejarah.Berbagai institusi ikut ambil peran. Madrasah, sebagai institusibagi proses pengembangan dan proses transmisi keilmuan Islam,sejak kelahirannya sudah tentu turut ambil bagian dalammenentukan ‘wajah’ keilmuan dalam Islam. Sejarah menunjukkanbahwa madrasah kemudian menjadi lembaga pendidikan yangkhas bagi ilmu syari’ah. Artinya, para fuqaha menggunakanmadrasah sebagai sarana bagi proses pengembangan dan transmisikeilmuannya. Berbeda dengan para failasuf, mutashawwifin,syi’iyyin, dan mutakallimin, yang pusat studi mereka lebih bersifatinformal.
