Multikulturalisme merupakan faham atau aliran yang membahas tentang kemajemukan budaya, kemudian berupaya untuk mengembangkan seluruh potensi manusia yang menghargai pluralitas dan heterogenitas sebagai konsekwensi keragaman budaya, etnis, suku, dan agama. Melihat realitas kemajemukan tersebut, multikulturalisme mencoba menggagas wacana tentang pendidikan agama, yaitu pendidikan Islam, dengan membawa misi pluralisme agama, humanisme dan demokrasi. Harapannya dengan wacana dan misi tersebut, dapat memberikan solusi dan pencerahan dalam menuju suatu perubahan yang signifikan terhadap pendidikan Islam dengan segala aspeknya, sehingga pendidikan Islam menjadi pendidikan yang inklusif dan dinamis.
