Bahasa merupakan sarana untuk berkomunikasi antarasesama sebagai anggota masyarakat bahasa (language community).Bahasa mencakup beberapa unit ketatabahasaan di antaranyafonologi, sintaksis, dan semantik yang merupakan unsur dasardalam kegiatan berbahasa. Element-element tersebut memilikiperan yang sangat penting dalam proses berfikir manusia danpengungkapan hasil pemikirannya dalam bentuk bahasa baik lisanmaupun tulisan.Artikel ini coba menganalisis metode pembelajarankontekstual (Contextual Teaching and Learning/ CTL), yaitu suatumetode yang bertujuan untuk memberikan kemudahan kepadasiswa untuk melihat makna melalui konteks dan menerapkannyadalam kondisi kongkret. Pembelajaran bahasa dengan metodekontekstual ini diharapkan mampu untuk meningkatkan fungsibahasa dalam aktivitas-aktivitas berfikir ilmiah. Karena bagaimanapunaktivitas berfikir ilmiah bahasa masih berada di bawahmatematika dan stastistik.
