Desentralisasi pendidikan yang mulai digulirkan padatahun 2003 dianggap banyak kalangan mampu menyelesaikanpermasalahan bangsa yang berakar pada rendahnya kualitaspendidikan. Telah terbukti bahwa pemerintahan yang sentralistiktidak dapat memberdayakan masyarakat dan justru akanmematikan kreatifitas dan partisipasi masyarakat. Hal ini akanberimplikasi pada rendahnya mutu pendidikan di daerah.Artikel ini melihat bahwa pesantren, yang sudah munculjauh sebelum Indonesia merdeka, memiliki cara tersendiridalam meningkatkan kualitas pendidikan di era otonomi. Depagyang menjadi payung madrasah, merupakan salah satudepartemen yang tidak masuk dalam wilayah otonomi. Sehinggabisa dimaklumi jika kaum santri saat ini lebih memilih jalursekolah dalam mengembangkan lembaganya. Pemilihan jalursekolah, yang berada dalam naungan Diknas yang sudah otonomi,diharapkan mampu meningkatkan semangat kompetisiberprestasi, dan aktualisasi diri lulusannya juga semakinbermakna konteks lingkungan dengan integrasi keilmuan dankompetensinya yang utuh dan padu.
