Perception of Edible-Nest Swiftlet Entrepreneurs on Zakat Obligation in Siwa Village, Wajo Regency.

This study aims to explore public perceptions regarding the obligation of zakat on swiftlet nest businesses and to identify the factors influencing their level of understanding in Siwa Subdistrict, Wajo Regency. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The informants consist of eight swiftlet nest business owners. The findings reveal that perceptions of zakat obligations among the community vary. Some informants do not comply with Islamic zakat regulations, and some do not pay zakat at all. Most of them consider zakat on swiftlet nests to be equivalent to trade zakat (2.5%), whereas, based on the characteristics of the business, it is more appropriately analogized to agricultural zakat, which has a rate of 5% due to high operational costs and seasonal income. Factors influencing the level of understanding and awareness of zakat include religious knowledge, access to zakat-related information, and social awareness. This study recommends enhancing zakat literacy through educational and religious approaches targeted at local business actors.References
