Pendidikan pada hakikatnya tidak mengenal akhir karenakualitas kehidupan manusia terus meningkat. Persoalan pendidikanbukanlah terutama pada target pengetahuan yang ditetapkan,melainkan pada bagaimana orang dapat berinteraksi/berdialogdengan situasi dan kondisi jamannyaArtikel ini menguraikan tentang pendidikan kesadaranala Paulo Freire. Bagi Freire, suatu bentuk pendidikan selaludidasarkan pada kesadaran manusia, yang meliputi tiga aspekyaitu: kesadaran naif (naival consciousness) yang melihat bahwasannyaaspek manusia sebagai akar penyebab masalah, kesadaranmagic (magic consciousness) berupa kesadaran masyarakat yangtidak mampu melihat adanya kaitan satu faktor dengan faktoryang lain, kesadaran kritis (critical consciousness) yaitu kesadaranyang lebih melihat sistem sebagai sumber masalah. Untukmencapai semua kesadaran ini dibutuhkan pendidikan kritis yangberbasis pada realitas sosial dan bukan merupakan pendidikan‘gaya bank’ yang akan menjadikan murid sebagai robot-robotyang tidak mengerti akan realitas-realitas sosial yang dihadapinya.Pendidikan yang mampu melakukan refleksi kritis terhadap‘ideologi dominan’ yang berlaku di dalam masyarakat, menantangsistem yang tidak adil, dan memikirkan sistem alternatifke arah transformasi sosial yang menuju masyarakat yang adil.
