Krisis yang terjadi dalam dunia pendidikan Islam dapat ditanggulangidengan melakukan revitalisasi peran dan fungsi pendidikan Islam itu sendiri.Revitalisasi pendidikan Islam dengan demikian dilakukan melalui dua hal: (1)mengkaji ulang watak dan karakteristik dari pendidikan Islam melalui kajianpilar, atau dasar filosofis pendidikan Islam; dan (2) reposisi peran institusipendidikan Islam seperti, pesantren, sekolah dan madrasah di tengah-tengahmasyarakat dengan memahami visi dan orientasi masing-masing lembaga dalamkerangka masa lalu, masa kini dan masa yang akan datang.
