Pendidikan yang selama ini dianggap sebagai pahlawandalam menegakkan kebenaran, pahlawan dalam membangunbangsa. Ternyata hanyalah sebuah topeng untuk mengelabui parakonsumennya. Dengan segala semboyan atas nama pembangunandan perkembangan anak didik, mereka para praktisi pendidikanmulai melebarkan sayapnya, terbukti dengan semakin menjamurnyapersekolahan dimana-mana, dan sekolah, kini dianggapsebagai jalan hidup bagi manusia modern. Mereka yang tidaksekolah berarti mereka terbelakang. Padahal memperoleh ilmupengetahuan tidak mesti melalui sekolah.Sehingga tidak heran jika model pendidikan seperti inimenuai kritikan dari berbagai kalangan, diantaranya adalah IvanIllich. Gagasannya untuk menggulingkan sekolah dan menyadarkanmasyarakat akan kebohongan ini, perlu kiranya diberidukungan dari berbagai pihak. Walaupun beberapa gagasannyatersebut perlu juga di telaah secara kritis dari sudut pandangIslam. Karena ternyata Ivan Illich seakan mengesampingkanetika dalam tujuan pendidikan, yang berakibat pada kebebasantak terbelenggu dan liar. Sehingga muncul ungkapan “ karenakebebasanlah siswa berpikir”. Disamping itu, penilaian Ivan Illichterhadap masyarakat hanya sampai pada sisi materialnya saja.Padahal di dalam Islam, materi bukanlah ukuran kebaikanseorang.
