Di antara bahasa-bahasa besar dunia yang dipelajari atasdasar kekuatan idealisme keagamaan adalah bahasa Arab. Maka,menjadi suatu hal yang sangat wajar, jika bahasa Arab di Indonesia—sebagai negara dengan populasi muslim terbesar di dunia—menjadi bahasa yang memiliki grafik perkembangan cukupsignifikan. Oleh karena itulah, beberapa perguruan tinggi diIndonesia mencoba untuk menawarkan program-programpengajaran bahasa Arabnya, yang pada dasarnya merupakankelanjutan dari metode “sorogan” yang telah dikenal di Indonesiasejak beberapa abad silam, dengan lebih menekankan pada aspektuturnya. Institut Studi Islam Darussalam, sebagai perguruantinggi pesantren yang bernaung di bawah Pondok ModernDarussalam Gontor, memiliki kelebihan yang menjadikannyasebagai satu-satunya perguruan tinggi yang dapat menerapkanDirect Method dalam pengertian yang sebenarnya.
