Abstract

The pattern of high sugar consumption is one of the habits that many people in Indonesia do, even though this habit will increase diabetes mellitus. Fruits and vegetables are recommended for consumption by people to prevent diabetes mellitus because they are low in sugar and have fibre that can bind sugar. This study aimed to determine the characteristics, frequency of eating fruits and vegetables in patients and non-diabetes Mellitus sufferers. The study used a cross-sectional design conducted in Belawan Village, Deli Serdang Regency from August to December 2019. The number of samples in this study was 90 people who were selected by accidental sampling technique. The research instrument used the 2018 Riskesdas questionnaire. The results of this analysis used chi-square analysis and prevalence ratio (PR). This study indicates that people living with diabetes generally occur in people aged 41-65 years, and people who do not consume fruit. People who do not eat fruit are at 8,094 times the risk of suffering from diabetes mellitus than respondents who eat fruit (1-2 servings/day). Fruit consumption is an important factor in reducing the risk of diabetes mellitus.
