Abstract

This research aims to describe teaching maharah kalam using the debate method to students in learning Arabic. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this research explores the experiences of 21 Darussalam Gontor University students who participated in structured debate sessions. The results showed that the debate method significantly contributed to vocabulary development, increased self-confidence, and critical thinking skills, all of which are important for effective communication in Arabic. Debate sessions provide a practical platform for students to practice structured argumentation and improve language fluency, through direct dialogue with their peers. Although challenges such as varying language abilities, limited vocabulary, public speaking anxiety, and limitations of the classroom environment were identified, strategies such as grouping students by ability level and preparatory exercises helped overcome these problems. This research confirms the relevance of the debate method as a supporting tool in Arabic language education, in line with Vygotsky's constructivist theory which emphasizes active social interaction in language acquisition. Overall, with the right support and structure, the debate method has proven to be an effective and theoretically grounded approach to increasing maharah kalam in Arabic language learning.
