Formulation and determination of SPF value of Oryza sativa L. extract sunscreen cream with variations of span 80 and tween 8

Abstract

White Rice Extract (Oryza sativa L.) has sunscreen activity because it contains flavonoid compounds. The cream preparation was chosen to maximize its potential as a sunscreen. The purpose of this study was first to determine the effect of variations in the concentration of Span 80 and Tween 80 on red rice extract cream and second to obtain the optimum formulation that produces the best physical properties. The cream preparation was made in 3 formulas, namely F1, F2, and F3 with a combination of emulsifier concentrations of Span 80 (1.41%; 3.41%; 5.41%) and Tween 80 (8.58%; 6.58%; 4.58%). The resulting cream preparation was subjected to physical property evaluation tests including organoleptic tests, homogeneity tests, viscosity tests, pH tests, spreadability tests, adhesion tests, and determination of SPF values. The results showed that variations in the concentration of Tween 80 and Span 80 affected the evaluation of the physical properties of white rice extract cream preparations, including pH, viscosity, spreadability, and adhesiveness. This study concluded that the best formula for white rice extract cream preparations was F3 with a concentration of Tween 80 (4.58%) and Span 80 (5.41%).   Keywords: white rice, span 80, tween 80, sunscreen
